The trend of Brazilian acts recording in English was only accentuated in 1974. Three of the five top-selling singles of the year were written in English, produced and recorded in Brazil by Brazilian artists: 'Me and you', 'She made me cry' and 'Feelings'.

The best selling single of 1974 was 'Me and you' written by God-knows-who. Four names are shown on the label: John Burn's (one can only wonder what an appostrophe attached to a proper name could possibly mean), Joe (then again what a single nickname as 'Joe' could lead to), D. Jones and last but not least D.MacLean who obviously is Dave MacLean, the singer himself.

The single was produced by Don MacField (any bets on who this could be?) and dexterously arranged by someone called Pete Cameron (I wish I knew his real name). The record was released in late 1973 to be included as 'sound-track' of novela 'Os ossos do barão' which ran from 8 October 1973 through 31st March 1974.

'Me and you' actually got to #1 when novela 'Ossos do barão' had already run its course in April 1974 but it kept at the top of the charts for 7 weeks.

15 January 1975 Amiga in. 243 - Amiga published its own compilation of the best-selling records of 1974, which doesn't necessarily matches the tabulation done by myself. Actually both lists are similar. Amiga's list misses Stevie Wonder's 'All in love is fair' and Antonio Marco's 'O homem de Nazaré' and includes Dennis Yost's 'Love me or leave me alone' and Junior's 'Excuse me'.

1. She made me cry - Pholhas (RCA)
2. Me and you - Dave MacLean (Top-Tape)
3. Stop, look, listen to your heart - Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye (Motown-Tapecar)
4. Goodbye yellow brick road - Elton John (MCA-Young-RGE)
5. Excuse me - Junior (RCA)

6. Feelings - Morris Albert (Charger-Records-Copacabana)
7. You make me feel brand new - The Stylistics (Avco-Top-Tape)
8. Love me or leave me alone - Dennis Yost & the Classics  IV (MGM-South-Top-Tape)
9. Gita - Raul Seixas (Philips)
10. Song for Anna  (La chanson pour Anna) - Herb Ohta (A&M-Odeon)

Extended-plays (compactos-duplos) according to Amiga's own 1974 compilation:

1. Dio come ti amo - Gigliola Cinquetti (Epic)
2. Gostava tanto de você - Tim Maia (Polydor)
3. Porque te amo - Celso Ricardi (Mercury)

1974 was the year Brazilian Progressive Rock has come of age. At least two bands Som Nosso de Cada Dia (Our Daily Sound) and Casa das Maquinas (Powerhouse) originated with members coming from Os Incriveis who had started in 1963 as an instrumental rock band called The Clevers. So we could safely say Brazilian Progressive Rock had been developing for 11 years. Virtuoso saxophonist Manito formed Som Nosso de Cada Dia and drummer Netinho helped form Casa das Maquinas.

Rita Lee and her supporting band Tutti Frutti finally release 'Atrás do porto tem uma cidade' their first album. Rita Lee would be exactly 'progressive rock' but as she hailed from Os Mutantes one might say Miss Lee was in the vicinity of P.R.

Raul Seixas had his best year ever in 1974 having released a new album 'Gita' and having had a #1 with it. Most of the album tracks would play on the radio. It was almost like having released a 'Greatest Hits' album. Seixas had a few followers and imitators. Silvio Brito from Minas Gerais was one of them.

Secos & Molhados the closest Brazilians ever got to Glam-Rock released their 2nd album and had an army of imitators. Ave Sangria, a glam-rock band from Recife-Pernambuco released an album featuring 'Seu Waldir' an openly gay samba that was soon enough banned by the Military Dictatorship that scourged the country.

There's a book by Celio Albuquerque called '1973 - O ano que reinventou a MPB' (1973 the year Brazilian pop music was re-invented') but I guess 1974 was much more interesting than 1973.

1974 could be considered the year Hybrid-English-Acts reached for the stars as Casey Kasem used to say at his 'American Top Forty' radio show. Terry Winter had started a trend in late 1971: Brazilians writing and singing songs in English became a full-time occupation to a lot of people. It all started with 'You noticed me' then Terry Winter had a #1 with 'Summer holiday' in 1972; Argentine combo Trio Galleta had a #1 with 'I am so happy'; a Brazilian young man from Goiania-GO called Chrystian had the best selling song of 1973 with 'Don't say goodbye'... and in 1974 we had a Brazilian fellow who would soon do the 'mission impossible': chart a Hybrid-English-Song at Billboard's Hot 100.

'Feelings' went to #1 in Brazil late 1974 and reached #6 in the USA in the Fall of 1975.
