1971 January - 'Madalena' / 'O amor é o meu país'

Even though there was no major change in the Hit Parade itself from 1970 to 1971, weekly-TV-guide Amiga magazine decided on a major make-over of its presentation. It added up two more charts: those of the EPs (extended play or 'compactos-duplos') which in Brazil would play at 33 rotation-per-minute mode (like singles aka compactos-simples) and  albums (LPs aka long-plays).

Macfarlane Gregory Anthony Mackey, recorded as Exuma (18 February 1942 + 25 January 1997) was a musician from the Bahamas, known for his almost unclassified music: a strong mixture of carnival, junkanoo, calypso and ballad. In his early days in New York's Greenwhich Village, Tony McKay - his self-given name - performed in small clubs and bars. Later, along with his partner & lifelong friend Sally O'Brien, and several musician friends, Tony lauched EXUMA - a 7-person group that recorded 'Exuma: The Obeah Man.

Wanderléa's entry at 1970's International Song Festival became her first self-penned hit (she wrote it with Dom of duo Dom & Ravel). She had moved from CBS to Polydor and tried something different. Golden Boys' 'Fumacê' was actually the B-side to 'Sou tri-campeão' (I am a three-time football world-champion of the world) penned by brothers Marcos Valle & Paulo Sergio Valle.

Destaque para compactos-simples: Christie continua firme na frente há várias semanas. Jackson Five é um nome que dará o que falar em nosso país. Foi em 1970 o grupo que mais vendeu nos EUA. Das 20 primeiras colocadas, onze são nacionais, o que vem provar, apesar de muitos dizerem o contrário, que o público não se importa com gravações nacionais.

Ivan Lins e Jorge Ben são os compositores, ambos novos, de tendências diferentes, cada qual fazendo o que pode dentro de suas características autorias. Tim Maia, nos LPs, sofre a ameaça de Agnaldo Timóteo, um campeão de vendas.

'Brasil eu fico' (Brazil, I stay) was an anwer for those Brazilians who did not agree with the Military Dictatorship imposed on the country (in 1964) by the Cold War raging red-hot in Latin America since the 1959 Cuban Revolution. There were those who had been exiled by the Military Junta and those who sought exile voluntarily out of fear for their lives and there were those who simply left the country because they didn't agree with the government. As already mentioned here, there was a fascist campaign waged by the Junta since early 1970 exhorting Brazilians to either 'Love Brazil or Leave it'... Wilson Simonal was part of a gang who agreed with the status-quo and made no bones about it. 'Brazil I stay' was a statement saying: I love Brazil (and its government) and I will not leave it... like those 'traitors' who live in London, Paris or Rome.

Tapecar, a label started in Rio de Janeiro by Manolo Camero, a Spanish businessman who made money adapting 8-track cartridge-tape-players into cars in the late 1960s. By 1971, Tapecar signed a contract with Detroit's Motown to release their records in Brazil. São Paulo's Fermata do Brasil didn't think much about losing Motown's contract because most Motown's acts somehow could not get a hold of Brazil's market. But that changed dramatically with the advent of the Jackson Five and Stevie Wonder. Suddenly, Motown was hot and Tapecar made a lot of money, which they invested in some local talents like Zedi, Beth Carvalho and Bezerra da Silva.

Jamaican Desmond Dekker's records started playing at Rio's night-clubs and radio stations; Bobby Bloom, who had written 'Montego Bay' in 1971, comes up with 'Heavy makes you happy'. He suffered from depression and kills himself in February 1974; The Mardi Gras was a New York-based rock band that were huge in France; Taiguara's 'Viagem' was his 2nd hit in a row; 1970 was his biggest year.

Jorge Ben's 'Força bruta' (Brute force) yielded at least three hits: 'Oba, la vem ela', 'O telefone tocou novamente' e 'Mulher brasileira'.

Destaque entre compactos-duplos e LPs: Todo mundo botou a boca no trombone dizendo: “Roberto não é mais aquele”. “Duvido que ele continue a vender” afirmavam uns e outros. A parada está aí, provando que em boca fechada mosca não entra mosquito. Roberto Carlos ameaça a posição que Tim Maia conserva há bastante tempo. Roberto Carlos ainda é o rei.

Os Incríveis sempre um sucesso, lideram a parada com 'Eu te amo meu Brasil'. Vinícius, que na Argentina (segundo a Cash Box) está entre os 10 LPs mais vendidos, ao lado do novo parceiro Toquinho, faz todos cantarem A tonga da mironga do kabuletê. Ademir Lemos was a DJ from Rio who played US records at 'Le Bateau', a night club in Copacabana. This is an album with 12 most popular cuts he played. Don't be fooled by the words 'ao vivo' (live). Joe Jeffrey's 'My baby loves lovin' is the most popular here. Bubble-gum's Joey Levine & Artie Resnick's 'Come on my baby', Sweet Magic's 'Rock Candy Mt.', Ronnie Milsap's 'What's your game', Wind's 'Grovin' with Mr. Bloe', Kool & the Gang's self-titled song are some of the other tracks. Does that qualify this album as 'funk'? Be the judge yourself.

Ademir Lemos (+ 24 Fev 1998) & Big Boy (Newton Alvarenga Duarte * 1 June 1943 + 7 March 1977) were two popular night-club DJs in Rio de Janeiro who made compilation-albums of US hits that sold like hot cakes for label Top Tape. The hits were mainly US dance music which Ademir labelled wrongly as 'funk music'. Due to Mr. Lemos original mistake Brazilians got into the habit of using the work 'funk' erroneously. Later on, whenever someone had a big party where soul or Black music would be played they would call it 'funk'! That's how a certain type of 1990's Brazilian rap music ended up being labeled 'funk'... and the original mistake was perpetuated for ever more.

Tim Maia resiste bem à pressão que Roberto Carlos faz nos LPs. Nos compactos, Elis também agüenta a barra de Roberto. Ademir e Big Boy, ambos discotecários, também brigam por posição, enquanto o público compra seus LPs.
